Sound and Costume

Sound

Throughout the whole process I wasn't sure on exactly what type of music i wanted to use within the piece. As both a dancer and choreographer I have always been extremely influenced by music and dynamics, but for this work I wanted to push myself to create the work without letting the sound influence this too much. I therefore didn't decide on what tracks I would be using until rehearsal 8, which for me was very late in the process compared to normal. The reason I pushed myself to do this was to give myself a barrier and obstacle to work with throughout the process by working in a way I wasn't used to. In rehearsals I always played music in the background from a playlist I had created, this consisted of both 'typical' contemporary dance songs and songs from a house / hip-hop genre. Then to decide on what tracks I would use for my piece, I asked the dancers if there was any they enjoyed dancing to as well as noticing which tracks had elements of change throughout, because I wanted this to support the change in section/ choreography.

Costume

The idea for costumes came from the second tech testing day because I had some photos taken by Kate for marketing purposes. I had one of my dancers (Daisy) wear an all black and tight outfit because at the time I thought this would be best for showing the silhouettes behind the material. However, on the day I found that with the side lights on, her skin was more visible behind the material. Similarly, when dancing within the rope, all the colours seemed to blend together rather than giving any contrast. Therefore, I chose a full white costume, the trousers were flowy with slits in the middle so as the dancers moved more of their legs were shown and the tops were cropped with short sleeves.
